The Penans, being one of Borneo’s indigenous tribes, are one of the last nomadic hunter-gatherers in Malaysia who continue to call the rainforest their home. They are reliant on the rainforest for survival – from food to shelter and medicine. Although many may have embraced modernity and live in resettlement communities set up by the government, some continue to practice a semi-nomadic lifestyle which they have done for generations. The transition to a modern lifestyle is challenging as the Penan not only have to learn new skills to sustain themselves, sending their children to school requires money. The Penan women rely heavily on their husbands for the well-being of the family so much so that if the husbands are unemployed then the entire family suffers.
